Quarterly review · #2

The French manga market, Q2 2026

861 releases between April and June 2026, or 6.5% fewer than in the same quarter of 2025. The decline continues, but it is slowing, and behind the volumes, it is the map of the groups that has been redrawn.

02The quarter in its history

A single figure says nothing. 861 releases is a lot or a little depending on what you compare it to, and the only comparison that means anything is the same quarter, year after year. Over five years, the peak is not where you'd expect: it sits in the second quarter of 2024, with 981 releases. The market has therefore lost 12% since its peak, over 2 consecutive years of decline.

But the slope is easing: after 6.1% last year, the decline is 6.5% this year, and the quarter even gains 3.9% on the Q1 2026. This is not a collapse: it's a normalisation after the 2023-2024 frenzy.

Quarter Releases Change Quarter leader
Q2 2022 777 – Pika (81)
Q2 2023 945 21.6% Pika (86)
Q2 2024peak 981 3.8% Pika (88)
Q2 2025 921 6.1% Meian (94)
Q2 2026 861 6.5% Pika (90)

The right-hand column deserves a pause. In five years, only 2 publishers have topped a second quarter: Pika and Meian. Pika takes it back this year after ceding it in 2025, but it takes it back with 90 releases — fewer than the 94 that Meian had needed to take it last year. When the market contracts, first place costs less.

03Month by month

The quarter doesn't read as a single block. April concentrates 299 releases, May falls back to 267, June climbs again to 295. May's trough is nothing abnormal: it comes right before the summer wave.

04The imprints

Pika remains alone at the top with 90 releases, or 10.5% of the quarter. Behind it, the gap is tightening: Kana and Vega are within 1 release of each other.

05What the imprint ranking hides

A ranking by imprint tells an incomplete story, because an imprint is not a company. Delcourt, Tonkam, Kurokawa and Soleil are four catalogues, and a single group. So are Meian, Noeve and Hana. Rebuilt at the scale of the houses that actually decide acquisitions, the ranking changes at the top.

Editis becomes the quarter's leading player with 162 releases (18.8%), even though none of its imprints tops the previous ranking. Pika, France's top imprint, belongs to Hachette Livre, which weighs 137 releases, or 15.9% of the market. The gap between the two readings is not cosmetic: it decides who counts as the leading manga publisher in France.

Editorial groups in Q2 2026: a group weighs the sum of its imprints
# Group Imprints active during the quarter Releases Share
1 Editis Delcourt, Tonkam, Kurokawa, Soleil, Kbooks, +1 162 18.8%
2 Hachette Livre Pika, nobi nobi!, Mangetsu 137 15.9%
3 IDP / Anime Store Meian, Noeve, Hana, Hot Manga, Teen's Love 127 14.8%
4 AC Media Ki-oon, Mana Books 61 7.1%
5 Média-Participations Kana 52 6.0%
6 Vegaunmapped Vega 51 5.9%
7 Glénat Glénat 37 4.3%
8 Panini Panini 35 4.1%

An honest caveat. A group is the sum of its imprints. The imprint → group mapping is curated by hand; an unmapped imprint stays counted under its own name. An imprint missing from the mapping therefore appears under its own name, which mechanically understates groups rather than overstating them. The ranking above is a floor, not a ceiling.

06The launches

289 series started this quarter, a third of all active series. But starting isn't the same as betting: the real measure of a publisher's commitment is how many volumes it stacks behind a first volume. Here are the launches that pushed hardest from their opening quarter.

The most sustained launches of the quarter: number of volumes published as early as Q2
Series Publisher Type Volumes in Q2
Magetsukan Kitan Black Box Editions Seinen 5
MAD Kazé Manga Shonen 4
On n'est pas ensemble Clair de lune Josei 4
One Piece - Saison 1 - Vivre Cards Glénat Artbook 4
Shounen Wo Ko - Jours Heureux Avec Un Garçon Clair de lune Seinen 4
Goze Hotaru Crunchyroll - Editions Shonen 3
Hero Organization Glénat Not specified 3
Honey trap Nazca Manhua 3

This ranking looks nothing like the previous one. 5 of the publishers launching hardest, Black Box Editions, Kazé Manga, Clair de lune, Crunchyroll - Editions, Nazca, don't appear in the top 10 imprints: these are houses making up in cadence what they lack in catalogue. The majors aren't absent (Glénat are there), but their output is elsewhere: they publish the continuations of series they already have, in bulk. Launching costs, continuing pays.

A caveat on this table: One Piece - Saison 1 - Vivre Cards is not a series. It's a data-book (character profiles sold in binders) and it takes a "launch" slot because the dataset counts releases, not stories. It's typed Artbook so it can be seen rather than guessed.

07Editorial picks

Everything above is measured. What follows is not: three titles out this quarter that I'm reading, that I'll follow, and that no ranking will ever say are good. The specs are verifiable. The opinions are my own.

Cosmos

Seinen · Ki-oon

Author
Ryûhei Tamura (story and art)
French release
2 April 2026 · €7.95
In Japan
Serialised in Monthly Sunday GX (Shogakukan) since 2023, ongoing

Kaede, a high-schooler, can smell lies. Rin is an investigator for COSMOS, an intergalactic insurance company. Because aliens live among us, and someone has to handle their claims.

The author of Beelzebub returns with the silliest and most solid concept of the year: a science-fiction office comedy. Ki-oon didn't get it wrong: runner-up at the 2025 Next Manga Awards, recommended by Tite Kubo, Hiromu Arakawa and Rumiko Takahashi. That kind of trio doesn't lend its name to just anything.

Fall in love, False Angels

Shôjo · Pika

Author
Coco Uzuki (story and art)
French release
20 May 2026 · €7.20
In Japan
Serialised in Dessert (Kodansha) since 2023, 2025 Kodansha Award, shōjo category

Otogi Katsura, a first-year class representative, is nicknamed "the heart-stealing angel." Behind the flawless front hides a vain schemer, and everything tips the day the school prince uncovers her true face, then shows her his own.

A shōjo whose two leads are manipulators who unmask each other rather than two blushing innocents. That alone is rare. The 2025 Kodansha Award and an anime adaptation announced for 2027 at MAPPA say Japan has made up its mind: it remains to be seen whether French readers will follow a shōjo this cynical.

Inkya Gal Revolution !

Yuri · Mangetsu

Author
Tsukiko Kashiwagi (story and art)
French release
24 June 2026 · €9.95 · 178 pages
In Japan
Serialised in Comic Yurihime since 2022 under the title Inkya gal demo ikigaritai!

Ichiko and Kuran are the only two members of their school's "Alternative Cultures Research Club." Two introverted gals who collect gadgets, argue endlessly about their obsessions, and whose closeness comes before everything, beyond simple friendship.

The most interesting title of the quarter for the observatory, because it falls into the thinnest category in the reference set. Yuri does exist, but it weighs 186 dated releases across the whole dataset, against 2,956 for yaoi: a ratio of 1 to 16. Male BL is an industry; yuri remains a shelf. That Mangetsu should bet a mainstream title on it, with a real campaign, is a rare fact — and exactly the kind of fact a sales figure would confirm, if anyone published them.

08The workhorses

The series that publish the most volumes in a quarter are the ones that structure the shelf day to day. They don't make the headlines: they make the numbers.

09What the market publishes

Here is the breakdown by editorial type, and here, right away, is its limit: 38.4% of the quarter's releases don't have a type yet (331 releases). Manga-News tags its records with a lag of several months, and a quarter that has only just ended is always the least-documented in the dataset. The chart below therefore covers only the 518 typed releases.

Shonen 206 · 38.9% Seinen 170 · 32.1% Shojo 51 · 9.6% Webtoon-Webcomic 44 · 8.3% Josei 14 · 2.6% Global-Manga 11 · 2.1% Yaoi 11 · 2.1% Manhua 11 · 2.1%

10The series that changed houses

Of the 737 series active this quarter, 5 have already changed publisher during their lifetime. That is very few, and it is precisely what makes the list readable: when a series changes houses, it's almost never an editorial choice, it's the trace of an acquisition or a bankruptcy.

Series active in Q2 2026 that have changed publisher
Series Type Editorial path Volumes in Q2
Animeland Not specified Anime Manga Presse → AM Media Network → Ynnis 1
City Hunter Not specified J'ai lu → Panini 1
Family Compo Seinen Tonkam → Panini 1
Great Mazinger Shonen Black Box Editions → Isan Manga 1
Mermaid Prince Shojo Tonkam → Taifu comics 1

One name keeps coming back: Panini picks up 2 of the 5 series concerned: City Hunter, Family Compo. These are heritage titles, originally published by houses that no longer carry them. While the groups consolidate around new releases, one publisher methodically gathers up the orphaned catalogues. It's a strategy, and it only shows in this column.

11Method and limits

What this review measures, and what it doesn't

Dated releases: manga, manhwa, manhua and webtoon published in France.

Series: A series groups the volumes of one title, with volume numbers and edition mentions removed.

New series: A series whose first dated release falls within the period. Reissues, box sets and collector's editions excluded.

Publishers: Co-editions are split on the "/" separator. A publisher is active if it has at least one release.

Groups: A group is the sum of its imprints. The imprint → group mapping is curated by hand; an unmapped imprint stays counted under its own name.

The limit that matters: The dataset measures published output, never sales — no French publisher discloses them. This review therefore describes supply — what publishers choose to publish — a leading indicator, but not revenue.

Two known flaws this quarter

Typing is incomplete. 38.4% of the quarter's releases (331) have no type in the dataset. This is not a measurement error, it's a lag: Manga-News records are filled in after release. Any share-by-type published here is computed on the typed subset, never on the total, and it will shift at the next recompute.

A namesake, found and fixed. While checking the three titles in the picks above, Cosmos (Ki-oon, April 2026) carried in the dataset the type "Sonyun-Manhwa", a Korean origin publisher and genres that weren't its own: they were the metadata of another Cosmos, a manhwa published by Kana in 2006. The dataset types new volumes by matching them on the title of an already-known series — a mechanism that keeps the typing rate up, and that breaks on namesakes. Same family of flaw as Wind Breaker, documented in the previous quarter.

The two volumes of Cosmos were retyped as Seinen, and the genres inherited from the wrong series were cleared rather than replaced: when a value is wrong, unknown beats false. The other two titles in the picks, which shipped with no type, were filled in by hand: Shojo for Fall in love, False Angels (Pika Shôjo imprint, serialised in Dessert), Yuri for Inkya Gal Revolution ! (serialised in Comic Yurihime). These five corrections are declared, sourced and reproducible in scripts/types_manuels.json; they carry the _type_source = manuel marker, which makes it possible to tell them apart from automatically typed rows at any time.

This review is the second edition of a quarterly series. The next one, covering the third quarter of 2026, will come out in mid-October, and the figures in this one will have shifted by then, because the data keeps coming in.
