2025, the year the market slowed without shrinking

3,591 releases in 2025, or 8.0% fewer than in 2024 — but 2024 was a record year. The market falls back to its 2023 level. The podium itself doesn't shift a single rung: it's all three steps sinking together.

02Ten years of the market

A 8.0% decline sounds like bad news. On a ten-year scale, it isn't one. In 2016, the market published 2,181 volumes; it publishes 3,591 today — 79% more at the peak and still 65% more than at the start. The 2024 peak (3,904 releases) was not a plateau: it was the culmination of a decade of growth fuelled by the post-Covid boom and the Pass Culture. 2025 doesn't go back to square one: it falls back to the 2023 level, which was already a very good year.

In coral: the record year (2024). In light: 2025.

And one column in the table below never moves: the leader's. Pika has led every year since 2016, 10 years without interruption. No other publisher has taken first place in a full year over the whole period observed.

03The pace of the year

The year isn't flat. November peaks at 363 releases, December drops to 228, a gap of 37.2%. The December trough is not a market weakness: it's the breath before the holidays, whose releases are pushed into November.

04The only real rise

The standout fact

Three publishers out of ten rise. Seven fall.

The 2025 podium is exactly that of 2024: Pika, Meian, Kana. None overtook another: all three decline. What changed in 2025 isn't the order of the ranking, it's that there is almost no one left to climb.

Of the top ten imprints, 3 rise (Ki-oon, Crunchyroll - Editions, Panini) and 7 fall. The steepest rise goes to Crunchyroll - Editions, which climbs from 113 to 145 releases (+28%). The steepest drop is Hana's (−34%), losing more than a third of its output in one year.

See all publishers

Don't over-read this rise. Crunchyroll - Editions isn't necessarily winning market share: the publisher directory documents an imprint migration — series from the Kazé catalogue launched under the Crunchyroll banner keep that imprint. Part of this gain is therefore a change of name, not a conquest. The dataset measures what's printed on the cover; it can't tell an acquisition from a rebranding. The limitation is real, and I'd rather write it down than leave it to be guessed.

05The imprint ranking
Top 10 imprints in 2025, compared with 2024
# Publisher Releases Share 2024 Change
1 Pika 348 9.7% 357 3%
2 Meian 281 7.8% 318 12%
3 Kana 197 5.5% 233 15%
4 Ki-oon 158 4.4% 133 19%
5 Delcourt 151 4.2% 194 22%
6 Tonkam 147 4.1% 198 26%
7 Crunchyroll - Editions 145 4.0% 113 28%
8 Panini 144 4.0% 133 8%
9 Kurokawa 139 3.9% 143 3%
10 Hana 138 3.8% 209 34%

The last column says the most, and it reads top to bottom: the decline isn't spread evenly. The top of the ranking absorbs it gently (Pika loses only −3%), while the belly of the top 10 collapses: 3 imprints lose more than 20% of their output in one year: Delcourt (−22%), Tonkam (−26%), Hana (−34%). What one publisher loses in a contracting market, another doesn't necessarily pick up: of ten imprints, 7 publish less than in 2024. 2025 is not a year of redistribution: it's a year of shared contraction.

06What the imprint ranking hides

An imprint is not a company. Delcourt, Tonkam, Kurokawa and Soleil are four catalogues and a single group; so are Meian, Noeve and Hana. Rebuilt at the scale of the houses that actually decide acquisitions, the ranking changes at the top.

Editis becomes the year's leading player with 672 releases (18.7%), even though none of its imprints tops the previous ranking. Pika, France's leading imprint, belongs to Hachette Livre, 577 releases, 16.1%. And Meian, the country's second imprint, is no lone wolf: it belongs to IDP / Anime Store, 559 releases combined (15.6%), a group that, taken together, is close behind the top two.

Three groups sit within 3 points of one another. The French manga market doesn't have a leader: it has a trio, and the gap between them is smaller than the imprint ranking lets you believe.

Editorial groups in 2025: a group weighs the sum of its imprints
# Group Imprints active during the year Releases Share
1 Editis Delcourt, Tonkam, Kurokawa, Soleil, Kbooks, +1 672 18.7%
2 Hachette Livre Pika, nobi nobi!, Mangetsu 577 16.1%
3 IDP / Anime Store Meian, Hana, Noeve, Hot Manga, Teen's Love 559 15.6%
4 AC Media Ki-oon, Mana Books 254 7.1%
5 Média-Participations Kana, Vega - Dupuis 205 5.7%
6 Albin Michel Akata, Albin Michel 146 4.1%
7 Crunchyroll - Editionsunmapped Crunchyroll - Editions 145 4.0%
8 Panini Panini 144 4.0%

An honest caveat. A group is the sum of its imprints. The imprint → group mapping is curated by hand; an unmapped imprint stays counted under its own name. An imprint missing from the mapping appears under its own name, which mechanically understates groups rather than overstating them. The ranking above is a floor, not a ceiling.

The table above bears the trace of it: the imprints flagged unmapped (Crunchyroll - Editions chief among them) are not independent houses, they are houses whose parent group isn't recorded yet. They are therefore counted on their own, and the group they belong to is undervalued by that much. The gap is known, it's visible in the table, and it will be filled at the next curation pass.

07Workhorses and launches

Two ways to fill a shelf. The first: publish the volumes of a series you already own in quick succession — these are the workhorses. The second: launch a new series and establish it within its first year. The two lists have almost no one in common, and that's the whole point.

Meian holds 4 of the top ten places in the workhorse ranking. That's the signature of a cadence strategy: releasing a series' volumes at a pace the established houses don't practise. The detail is telling: Meian publishes faster than anyone and falls by 12.0% over the year. Cadence is an engine, not an insurance policy.

On the right, the launch ranking is far more scattered, and no publisher dominates it. That's expected: launching a new series takes a rights negotiation, a marketing budget and a bet on readers who don't exist yet. Continuing a series you already own takes only a calendar.

08What the market publishes

Shonen and seinen together account for two thirds of the year's typed releases. The rest share a third, and webtoon — billed for five years as the next big thing — tops out at 7.6%.

09The series that changed houses

Of the 1,570 series active in 2025, 16 had already changed publisher during their lifetime. A series almost never changes houses by choice: it changes because the previous one closed, was bought out, or gave up. Those paths are the memory of the sector's failures.

10Method and limits

What this review measures, and what it doesn't

Dated releases: manga, manhwa, manhua and webtoon published in France.

Series: A series groups the volumes of one title, with volume numbers and edition mentions removed.

New series: A series whose first dated release falls within the period. Reissues, box sets and collector's editions excluded.

Publishers: Co-editions are split on the "/" separator. A publisher is active if it has at least one release.

Groups: A group is the sum of its imprints. The imprint → group mapping is curated by hand; an unmapped imprint stays counted under its own name.

The limit that matters: The dataset measures published output, never sales — no French publisher discloses them. So saying the market "fell 8.0%" means publishers published less, not that readers bought less. The two curves are linked, with a lag of several quarters, but they are not the same.

Typing is incomplete. 472 releases in 2025 (13.1%) have no type in the dataset. Shares by type are computed on the typed subset, never on the total.
